In 1 Samuel 17 we have the great story of David and Goliath. Read the whole chapter! It is rich in Spiritual truths. They are literally everywhere is this story! There is one section that the Lord has had me thinking about quite a lot. It is this…
1 Samuel 17:20-24
20 Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath , the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. 24 When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear. NIV
Now hear me on this. This is for me and for anyone with their Spiritual ears on. It is not a judgement made from a ‘superior’ position.
Observation: The Israelite army (the Army of God), led by Saul, took up their positions, shouted at the enemy, saw the enemy, and ran away. Now, how often did this happen? Once? Twice? Have a look at verse 16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand. NIV So, for 40 days (twice a day) we have the army of God going through their ritual of shouting and waving their arms and puffing out their chest’s at the enemy and then running away in fear when the giant shows up.
This is a wake up call!
We can’t be shouting out victory on Sunday and running away in fear from the enemy on Monday! I’m not talking about the enemy ‘out there’ somewhere. I am talking about the enemy within us that keeps us in bondage, that keeps us small and powerless for the Kingdom of God. God wants us truly released from the bondages of the enemy.
2 Corinthians 3:17-18
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory , are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory , which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. NIV
Lord, I want to be a giant slayer in my life!
In Revelation 12:10-11 it says:
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ.
For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony ; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. NIV
‘Accuses them before our God day and night‘ – does that remind you of someone – Goliath? And how did they overcome? By the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony.
I want to be around giant slayers!
In Jesus, we have the victory to overcome every giant in our lives. By the blood of the lamb the battle and the victory has already been won, in Jesus name! And ‘the word of their testimony’ is the testimony of the victories Jesus has had in their lives. Testimonies of victories are contagious! And these testimonies bring all glory and honour and power and praise to our Heavenly Father as He transforms us from glory to glory into His likeness!
Lord, glorify yourself through us!
Think and pray about this.
Blessings
Steve
